IN AID OF THE GREENWICH & BEXLEY HOSPICE

As you will see from the header on the previous page, we are an Alliance of the former Woolwich & District and Eltham & District Sunday Leagues. Mrs Pat Tansley was instrumental in the development and success of both these former organisations and played her part on both Committees at different times.

A thoroughly respected and enthusiastic ‘football’ lady, she won many admirers with her approach to both football administration and the way her team “Springhill United” played the game.  What is often forgotten or not known by many is that she also, along with Arthur of course, looked after many young people in her own home, giving them guidance, discipline, morals and a set of “life rules” to follow, which made them the people they are today.

As stated overleaf, this is the playing of “The Pat Tansley Memorial Cup” and it has become the Alliance’s ‘curtain-raiser’ to each season - our own “Charity Shield”.

Due to popularity and the all-inclusive ethos of the WESFA we introduced a match for the best sportsmanship team of the previous season to play against our panel of Referees last year (2013-2014). Everybody enjoyed the experience and therefore we have incorporated it into this annual event to make a day of celebration and fund-raising. Last season’s sportsmanship team of the year is Mottingham Forest so they are the WESFA Referees opponents.

The Pat Tansley Memorial Cup is contested by Eltham Phoenix B and Sabanoh 97.

Today’s match will feature the use of “roll on, roll off” substitutes, in order to give players an equal chance of some playing time (and maybe to get their second wind!)  Playing time will be the standard 45 minutes each way, followed by extra time of 15 minutes each way and penalties, if necessary.

The “Alliance” has developed from its beginning in 2006 to become an accredited FA “Respect” league and is looking to achieve its “Charter Standard” status by the time we commence playing next season (2017-2018). Other projects are in the pipeline and are at various stages of progress and more news will inevitably follow on these as we go through the season.  Our philosophy is “inclusion”, which means all are welcome to play football, irrespective of race, religion, gender, age, sexuality or politics......this will remain constant.

Today’s match officials are as follows:

Sportsmanship Trophy – Nabila Youssouf, Jim Duff & Ken Baillie

Pat Tansley Memorial – Jeff Lengthorn, Martin Connell & Nick O'Donnell

We all look forward to goals, thrills, spills and a heap of entertainment along the way!  Many thanks for your support - approximately £200 raised on the day.
